• Biosketch

George Creed, Jr. spent his early years in New York City where he married Hylda Long of New Jersey. On returning home from World War I, he joined his family in Keyport, NJ where his wife had begun a new life closer to her own family roots. George and Hylda had nine children, seven of whom survived into their adult years. Despite the Depression and marginal opportunities for employment, George and Hylda provided a stable foundation for their children's religious and educational development.

In the 1950's, George gave his children copies of letters from Yale University corroborating a family tradition that his paternal grandfather, whom he never met, Cortlandt Van Rensselaer Creed, was a Civil War Surgeon and Yale graduate.

Before dying in 1972, George wrote a series of heartfelt autobiographical notes about the influential people and events of his life.

I was born on Aug. 15, 1895, in New York City, between 42nd St. and 43rd St. on Third Ave. on the 5th floor of a brick tenement house. The first thing I remember was the assassination of Pres. William McKinley in 1901, because at that time the windows had the President's picture draped in black bunting, in mourning for our dear President. I was about 5 or 6 yrs old.

I had a wonderful father and mother. My father had all my clothes made to order at Browning, King & Co. My father was a great sports fan. He loved prize fights and baseball games. In fact I was with him when he caught his death of cold which devolved into consumption. He was sick for quite a while at home. We were living at 134^th St. in Harlem. I was so small, I was lifted up to the casket to kiss my father good-bye. . . .more

Donald G. Creed, 87, of Boston, formerly of Keyport, died Sunday, Oct. 16. Mr. Creed was born in New York City and was raised in Keyport. He enjoyed fishing and sports and was a lifetime Yankees fan. He spent the majority of his life in Boston. He was a welder at General Electric in Everett, Mass., for 33 years. After retiring, he was a volunteer in senior services. Surviving are his wife, Johanna Williams Creed; a son, Donald G. Creed Jr. of Boston; grandchildren, Donald Creed III, Pamela DiGiovanni, Leslie Redden and James Creed; great-grandchildren, Anthony DiGiovanni and Troy Creed; two sisters, Georgette Mitchell of Hazlet and Gwendolyn Washington of Keyport; a brother, Reginald Creed of Manahawkin; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A lifelong fighter of the good fight, Jacqueleine Creed Archer, died of complications from her long battle with multiple sclerosis at 5:20 p.m., Monday, in the Glens Falls Hospital. She was 72. She and her former husband, Lloyd Archer, moved to Plattsburgh with their daughters, Taryn Michelle and Tracey Nadine in 1962.

Archer's North Country legacy includes founding the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission of Clinton County, president of the Citizen's Council on Alcoholism and director of the Champlain Valley Hospital unit of Alcoholism Information and Referral Center. She retired in 1982 due to her private battle with multiple sclerosis, which confined her to a wheelchair, but did not prevent her from presenting programs on alcohol and drug abuse in area schools. . .full obituary
