First Generation

1. Thomas Tarbell(Tarbole)-931^1,2 was born in 1615/1618 in , , England. He died on 11 Jun 1678 in Charlestown, Sufolk Co., MA.

Thomas Tarbell (perhaps Tarbole) was the ancester of all early Tarbell families in New England. This writer has

not verified the arrival of other Tarbell family menbers. There is some evidence that a Hugh and a David Tarbel

did arrive in 1718. I have not been able to identify any relatives of these two people. Thomas settled to

Watertown, probably before 1644. He is mentioned in town records as owning land in Watertown in 1647. On 30

Mar 1663 Thomas and his wife Mary (no surname) sold their house and land in Watertown and moved to Groton.

Mary died in Groton 29 Apr 1674 at age 54 years. The family left Groton, probably 1675, left Groton and moved

to Charlestown after Groton was destoried during King Phillip's War. On 15 Aug 1676 Thomas then married

Susanna, widow of John Lawrence. It is known that Susanna Batchelder was the second wife of John Lawrence.

John died 11 Jul 1667.

Thomas Tarbell died of smallpox 11 June 1678. His eldest son Thomas also died of smallpox in April of the same

year. Administration of his estate was granted to his son John on 17 Aug 1678. The court files bearing the dates

of 31 May 1680 and 18 Mar 1680 show the eight children listed in the family data.

Susanna died 5 Jan 1691.

King Phillip's War occurred between July and August 1675. All central and southeastern New England were

involved. It was caused by the encroachment of white settlers on the Indian fishing and hunting grounds. The war

was named after an Indian Chief called Matacomet. The fighting ended when the Chief was killed.

Thomas married (1-MRIN:267) Mary-932. Mary was born in 1620. She died on 29 Apr 1674 in Groton, Middlesex Co., MA.

Second Generation

2. Thomas Tarbell-926^3,4,5 (Thomas) was born in 1644 in Watertown, Middlesex Co., MA. He died on 27 Apr 1678 in Charlestown, Sufolk Co., MA.

Thomas Tarbell was born in Watertown in 1644, son of Thomas and Mary. Thomas was a proprietor of Groton.

In June 1666 he married Hannah or Anna Longley, the daughter of William and Joanna Longley of Groton.

Probably in the fall of 1675, the family moved to Charlestown. Groton was destoried during King Phillip's War.

Hannah or Anna joined the Church in Charlestown on 28 Oct 1677.

King Phillip's War lasted only from July to August of 1675. However, all central and southeastern New England

were involved. It was caused by the encroachment of white settlers on the Indian fishing and hunting grounds. It

was named for King Phillip (Matacomet) an Indian Chief and was brought to an end by the Chief's death.

Thomas Tarbell, of this narrative, for service in King Phillips War, was awarded lot 63 in Narraganset #6. It is

unlikely he ever built a home there. Narraganset #6 is now Templeton, Worcester Co. MA It was common

practice to grant or award land to soldiers who fought in these wars rather than paying them in money. Thomas's

brothers John and William also fought in King Phillip's War.

Thomas died of Smallpox in 1678 as did his father Thomas.

Administration of the estate of Thomas was granted to his widow on 18 Dec 1678. She did not long survive him,

but died at Groton 29 Dec 1680. Her death occurred a month after her father William Longley died. Her mother,

Joanna Longley and her brother, William were appointed administrators of her estate on 5 Apr 1681 but no

settlement of either estate has been found.

According to information gathered at the Conn. State Library, no book or author listed: Abigail Tarbell, daughter

of Thomas and Mary Tarbell was the third wife of Joshua Whitney. First was Mary, no surname known and then

Mary again no surname known. Abigail and Joshua were married 30 Sep 1672.

John married (MRIN:283) Mary Nurse-962, daughter of Francis Nurse-3443 and Rebecca Towne-1910 (MRIN:1223), on 25 Oct 1678 in Salem Village, , MA. Mary was born in 1659. She died on 28

Jun 1749.

Third Generation

10. Thomas Tarbell Corporal-915⁶ (Thomas Tarbell, Thomas) was born on 6 Jul 1667 in Groton, Middlesex Co., MA. He died on 8 Oct 1715 in Lexington, , MA and was buried in Lexington, , MA.

Thomas Tarbell (Corporal) was born on 6 July 1667 to Thomas Tarbell and Hannah or Anna Longley. He was

born and lived most of his life in Groton, MA. At sometime before his death in 1715, he moved to Lexington, MA.

Thomas was the Town Clerk in Groton from 1704 to 1705. He was chosen as Deacon of the Church of Groton on

22 April 1715.

Three of his children were stolen by an Indian raiding party on 20 June 1707. John age 12 years, Sarah age 14 and

Zachariah age 7 years. In the book, History of the Town of Mason, NH, by John B. Hill, page 312, there is a story

which reads as follows: " One evening, a little after sunsetting the Indians came suddenly upon the inmates of the

garrisoned house, which stood where the Rev. Mr. Sanderson's house now stands, or near that spot. They all

escaped and got safely into the garrison. except the three Tarbell children who were playing in or around a cherry

tree and had not sufficent time decend and save thenselves from captivity." Provisions were made in the Will of

Thomas should the children ever return from captivity. Capt. Thomas and Capt. Samuel Tarbell, sons of Thomas,

many years later, attempted to get the grown male children to return. They did return to Groton for a brief visit

about 1739 but would not stay as they were not well received by the residents of Groton. They both soon returned

to the Indian tribe that had raised them. Sarah, was found among the Indians by a French missionary and taken to

a Convent in Montreal. Both boys married into the Chief's family. Jealousy developed in the tribe because the

white men having authority and the tribe divided. The Chief's family and followers, travelled up the St. Lawrence

River to what is now the St. Regis Reservation in New York State. Descendents of the two boys are still living in

Hogansburg on the St. Regis Reservation. There have been many who have been in positions of authority

including Chief.

It has been reported that some French Officers were so impressed by the size and physique of John and Zachariah

as young men, they took one of them to France for the king to see what remarkable specimens these Indians were.

The king was also impressed and had three paintings made. One of these is suppose to be in a museum in

Montreal.

From the book "Old Groton Days" by Elizabeth Lemay Hayes. Written for the Groton Historical Society and

published 1955 the following event was described:. "It was in 1707, and Queen Anne's War, another of the many

wars between the English and the French, had been draggin on for five years, with occasional small raids and

skirmishes. A man, John Davis, had been killed while taking in the washing his wife had hung out earlier. Two

soldiers, garrisoned here had been killed and one carried off, while walking to Sunday meeting. It was enough to

make people a little edgy, but not steady enough to keep them cautious. One evening, late in June or early July,

when the cherries were ripe, Three children, Sarah, John and Zachariah Tarbell climbed up into a cherry tree to

sample the fruit. They were so busy stuffing their mouths full of cherries that they failed to notice the stealthy

movements of several Indians who crept up on them and surrounded the tree before they knew it. The Indians

made signs to them that they were to make no noise and come down at once. The Indians had tomahawks and had

proved often enough that they were willing to use them. The children went along with the Indians, who dragged

them rapidly through the woods by their wrists. Presently, they were joined by a larger party, making about fifteen

in all. There were squaws with this party, who rode ponies on the trail and did the cooking and other work in the

camp. The squaws sometimes let the children ride. After five days travel to the north, the Indians felt safe from

pursuit and they stopped to rest. This raiding party may have been led by Taxous, the same chief who led the

massacre in 1694. They continued on to the foot of Lake Champlain and from there, by canoe, the length of the

lake and down a river to the St. Lawrence. There the tribe had its village on the shores of the great river. Soon,

the French people in a nearby settlement heard that the Indians had a white girl. They were interested and soon

she was adopted into a well-to-do family by the name of Jacques Urbain Robert de Lamorandiere. She, Sarah,

learned that her cousin, Lydia Longley, who had been carried off at the time of the massacre in "94", had become a

nun in a nearby convent. She was allowed to visit her cousin. Sarah was fourteen when she was taken and Lydia

had been twenty in "94" so she was a woman in her thirties when Sarah found her. Sarah wanted to be with Lydia.

She became a novice and finally a nun in the same order. She changed her name from Sarah to Marguerite.

Neither of the girls ever came back to Groton. The boys,however, who were twelve and seven, found a far

different life waiting for them. They were to be adopted into the tribe. First, they were forced to run the gauntlet,

and when they got over that ordeal they were given to a old squaw who pulled out all their hair but a topnot. This

topnot was dressed in the Indian fashion with feathers and they were given Indian clothing, made of skins. Their

bodies were smeared with paint and strings of wampum were hung around their necks. Then, they were given a

ceremonial bath in the river and told that by this they had become Indians and were no longer white men.

Afterward, there were more ceremonies around a council fire and they were adopted into the tribe and became

blood-brothers of the Indians. Then there was feasting. The boys were afterward taught, as Indian boys are, how

to track, to hunt with a gun and with a bow and arrows, to snare game and to fish. When they were older, they

were taught to fight. They were given Indian names but they did not give up the name of Tarbell. When they

grew up, they married daughters of chiefs of the tribe and became chiefs themselves. In 1739, they came back to

visit their native town (Groton) but they came as Indian chiefs, dressed in full war-paint. I (the story teller)

remember seeing them. They looked like Tarbells-like other members of the family that is and yet they looked

more like Indians because they moved and acted like Indians. They had forgotten much, including the language,

which they now awkwardly, as Indians, spoke it. There was quite an effort made to persuade them to stay. Even

the Governor of the Province wanted to offer them a grant of land but they had no thought of staying. Later, we

heard that they had gone apart from the rest of their tribe and founded a new villiage, called St. Regis. Just before

the Revolution, a grnadson of one of the Tarbell boys, entered the charitable school for Indians up in New

Hampshire, Dartmouth College they call it and the old chief sent word by him to his relatives in Groton. Seems he

was feeling great love and affection for his family in Groton by this time and especially, he wanted them to know

that his grandson was getting educated."

Eleaser was born 28 April 1707. A son Thomas Tarbell and Elizabeth Woods.

Not much is known of this man and his life. Be was born grew up and married in Groton, MA. His wife

Elizabeth Bowers, was also born in Groton. About 1740 Eleaser and his family moved to Lunenburg.

Two sons, Eleazer and Jonas were soldiers in the French and Indian War. Jonas was killed in the summer of 1756

at Crown Point.

In 1755, Zachariah served in the Expedition sent out against Nova Scotia to carry French families to exile.

According to military service accounts, Zachariah was living in Shirley, MA in 1762.

Deed records also show Zachariah living in Shirley in 1766.

December 1772 - "Page came to carry off the Boards of my Tarbell house".

"Tarbell's wife and family moved out of my house by ye Mill Pond".

May 1773 - "This day Samson Tuttle brought me a writ for Zachariah Tarbell Board and C". Note: In English

Law, a writ of right protected or restored title rights in freehold real estate. Also, judicial power requesting the

record of a case for review.

June 1773 - "I went to Littleton to a trial with Sprague in Tarbell's behalf. He (Sprague) secured a judgement

Westminster as a Privite in Capt. John Wood's Co. , Col. Paul D. Sargent's Regt. Enlisted 27 April 1775,

mustered 1 August 1775. Service time 3 months and 12 days.

Zachariah, Jr. Same as above except enlisted 30 April 1775 and was

mustered 1 August 1775 serving 3 months and 9 days.

According to the book, "History of Westminster, MA 1728-1893" by William Sweetzer Heywood: Zachariah and

family did live in Westminster but writer could not determine when or for how long or where the family went

next.

Zachariah,Jr. , Eleazer and other children of the family can be traced to Vermont. It is not known if the father died

at Westminster or moved to Vermont and died there. Zachariah, Jr and Eleazer did sell land in Brookline

Vermont in Oct 1798. This may have been their father's property. Thomas, the youngest son had left Vermont and

was living in Willingboro, PA when the land transaction occurred.

Sometime during adulthood, Eleazer and both of his brothers change their last

name to Tarble.

Born in Shirley, MA . Baptism date 14 May 1769. Father, Zachariah Tarbell and mother,Mary Gould. The Town

of Drummerston records for 1789-1799 do not show and children born to Eleazer and Silence. However, it is

known that two daughters were born prior to the 1790 Federal census, which was not taken until 1791. By 1799,

they had atleast two sons. In March 1799 Eleazer and Zachariah Tarbell sold land in Brookline, Windham County,

VT for $33.34 current money. Drummerston and Brookline are not far apart but it is not known why Eleazer

owned land in that town unless, it was his father's property. No death information or grave site could be found for

Zachariah, Sr. It is assumed he died prior to 1800 but there is not record of him in the 1790 census.

Sometime between March 1799 and the Federal Census of 1800, Eleazer and family left

VT as he was not counted in VT. A John Tarble (note spelling change) son of Eleazer Tarble

was born in Jericho, Chenango County, NY in 1806. Until 1814, Bainbridge was known as North Jericho and

Afton as South Jericho. Other known sons include Cyrus born in 1791 and James G. born

about 1799. Eleazer and at least part of his family left South Jericho about 1811. In the New York State census

of 1855, son John was living in Lapeer, Cortland County, NY for 44 years. No

Tarble families found in available records for Federal census of 1810 for Chenango or Cortland Counties. Most of

the 1810 census is incomplete due to the burning of Washington, DC during the War of 1812.

During the Federal census of 1820, Eleazer was in Virgil, Cortland County. The town of Virgil and Lapeer are

very near one another. James G. was also in Virgil. Eleazer would have been 50 or 51 years old.

During the Federal census of 1830, Eleazer was still in Virgil. He would have been 60 or 61 years old.

During the Federal census of 1840, Eleazer was still in Virgil, also son John. James G. was in

Marathon. All in Cortland County. Eleazer would have been 70 or 71 years old.

Eleazer died 8 Jan 1850, he was 80 years, 9months old. His actual birthdate is not known. Assuming he was

born in April 1769 and Baptized 14 May 1769, the above years and months fit. Eleazer was living with the family

of James G. Tarble when he died and was buried in Marathon near his wife. No will could be found in the

Cortland County Courthouse for Eleazer so no list of living heirs could be located.

Eleazer married (MRIN:262) Silence Wood-892 on 2 Oct 1788 in Drummerston, Windham Co., Vermont. Silence was born in Jul 1770. She died on 26 Jan 1841 and was buried in Sessions Cem., Marathon, Cortland Co., NY.

101. Thomas Tarble-408^18,19,20 (Zachariah Tarbell, Eleazer Tarbell, Thomas Tarbell, Thomas Tarbell, Thomas) was christened on 21 Jun 1772 in Shirley, Middlesex County, MA. He died in 1806 in South Jericho, (Afton), Chenango Co., New York and was buried in South Jericho, Afton, Chenango Co., New York.

Historical Information: Prior to 18 Nov 1857, Afton was called South Bainbridge. Pior to 1814, Afton was called

South Jericho and prior to 1791 the entire area was known as Clinton Township. Great Bend, PA was called

Willingboro and Susquehanna County was called Luzerne County until 1810.

Little is known of the early years of Thomas(6) or how he found his way to Willingboro, PA. The 1790 Federal

Census did not show a Thomas Tarbell of the proper age anywhere where the census was conducted. It would

appear that Willingboro was not counted as the family of Mercy Buck, wife of Thomas, was in Willingboro in

1790 but they were not counted either. Since Vermont was not a state in 1790, their census was not taken until

1791.

It is believed that Thomas went to Vermont in 1782 with some portion of his family and left there just pior to the

1790 census, travelling south into New York State and down the Susquehanna River. It is not known when he

arrived in Willingboro but he married Mercy Buck, daughter of the Rev. Daniel and Olive Buck in 1794 or 95.

Three children were born in Willingboro including the writers direct line, Thomas Buck Tarbell. After the 1800

Federal Census the family together with Daniel Buck and part of his family moved back up the Susquehanna River

to South Jericho (Afton) NY. Evidence indicates that Eleazer, brother of Thomas had joined him just prior to this

move and the two of them started farming along the east side of the river near South Jericho. Rev Daniel Buck

organized a Congregational Church in this same area returning to Willingboro in 1804 or 1805. In 1806 Thomas

was killed as the result of a fall from a barn or simular structure. He was buried in a small cemetery on the Abel

Stowell farm. There is a description of the grave location in the Tarbell records but all physical evidence is gone.

Mercy took the two older children and went back to her parents in Willingboro. Thomas B. and a younger brother,

Hiram were left in South Jericho to be raised by friends and/or relatives. Hiram was raised by the family of Daniel

S. Buck, brother of Mercy. Thomas B. was raised by a family by the name of Smith and/or a family by the name

of Tarbell. There is conflicting data on this subject. There is no known record that would help explain with whom

he was raised. It is possible, that he lived first with his Uncle Eleazer who left the area and settled in Virgil,

Cortland County, NY about 1811. It is further possible that they believed Mercy would come back for the rest of

her children so Thomas B. went to live with a Smith family. It was 1816 when Thomas B. left Afton (South

Jericho), traveling down river to Great Bend looking for his mother. By this time she had re-married and left the

Great Bend area. See the second marriage of Mercy to Moses Rowley.

Thomas married (MRIN:162) Mirza (Mercy) Buck-409²¹, daughter of Daniel Buck Major-Rev.-772 and Olive Stephens-790 (MRIN:231), in Willingboro, Luzerne Co. PA. Mirza was born on 21 Sep 1778 in , Washington Cty., New York. She died on 28 Mar 1863 in Freetown, Cortland County, New York and was buried in Rowley Cemetery, Texas Valley, Cortland County, NY.

Second marriage to Moses Rowley. Additional children. Moses died 28 Feb 1864.

Mirza, later called Mercy was born 21 Sept 1778 in Washington County, NY. This writer has been bothered by

the fact that the family never lived in Washington County. According to the NY State census of 1855, Mercy Buck

Tarbell Rowley claimed she was born in Washington County, NY. The following explaination is offered: Daniel

moved from New Milford, CT to the "Kings District" Canaan, NY after 1762. The area later was call Columbia

County. It is known that Daniel was in Canaan 24 June 1776 as he was the moderator of a meeting held to

declare independence and to elect delegates to represent the County of Albany in the Provincial Congress.

Daniel's first wife Ann Denton died May 1777. Daniel married his second wife, Olive Stephens in August 1777.

During this time Daniel held the rank of Major in the Albany County Militia performing the duties of chief

Surgeon. During the summer and fall of 1777 there was heavy fighting between England and the Colonist in and

around Washington County. It is suspected that Major Daniel Buck was ordered to stay in Washington County to

treat the sick and wounded after the fighting ceased. This lasted through the winter of 1778 and into the summer.

In July 1778, Major Buck resigned his commission from the 17th Reg.,NY Militia. His reason was "health". This

was roughly two months before Mirza (Mercy) Buck was born. It was not uncommon for wives of the officiers to

follow their husbands from battle to battle. It is further suspected that it was too late in the pregnancy for Olive to

travel on horseback. Therefore, the couple remained in Washington County until the baby was born and the three

of them could travel back to Canaan.

Mercy Buck would have been between 15 and 17 years old when she married Thomas Tarbell in 1794-1795.

No marriage record could be found. The wedding took place in Willingboro (Great Bend), PA and it is likely that

Rev. Daniel Buck, Mercey's father performed the ceremony. Their first child, Daniel Tarbell was born 22 Sep

1796. The Tarbell family, including

three children moved to Afton, Chenango County, NY after the federal census of 1800. They were counted on 10

April 1800. They moved to Afton, then called South Jericho, with Rev. Buck and at least part of the Buck family.

Rev. Buck organized a Church in South Jericho and then moved back to Willingboro prior to 1806.

When Thomas was killed by a farm accident

in 1806, Mercy returned to Willingboro taking Daniel, age 10, Polly, age 8 with her. She left Thomas B.,age 6

and Hiram, age 4 with two different familes in South Jericho to be raised by them.

Mercy then married a man by the name of

Moses Rowley and had eight more children. They lived in Willingboro until 1813-1817. The family then moved

to Delaware County until 1819 when they moved to Tompkins County. The family moved to Cortland County

between 1838 and 1841, living in Freetown until she died 28 Mar 1863.

living with son Samuel and his wife Lucy in Marathon, Cortland County, NY. Age 64. Census indicated he had

lived in Marathon for one year. The 1860 Federal census does not show Cyrus as living in

Marathon. May have been with a different family member. Cyrus died 13 July 1879, he

was 86 years, 3 months and 9 days.

Almond was a farmer who came to Willingboro (Great Bend) PA in 1800 with his family. His father, Almond, Sr.

had a farm about four miles above (probably north) of the village. Almond, Jr. married Polly Tarble (Tarbell) in

March of 1812. Almond and Polly apparently stayed in Willingboro until 1824. Six Children were born in this

village, four of which died before their tenth birthday. In 1824, the family moved to Groton, Tompkins County,

NY where they remain until 1835. Six more children were born in Groton. In 1835, the family moved back to

Great Bend, living to the northeast of the village, in an area called "Red Rock". Red Rock was located along the

Susquahanna River. On the south side of the river was a section of shear rock face. The Indians of long ago had

painted the face in many bright colors, mostly red. One more child was born in Great Bend in 1836.

Almond, Jr. and Polly had one child that was struck

and killed by lightning. Not sure which one. Almond, Jr. had a sister, Phila who married Silas Buck, son of

Daniel E. Buck. A sister of Silas, Mirza (Mercy) Buck was the mother of Polly.

Thomas Buck Tarbell lived to be 87 years, 7 months and 23 days. He and his wife Lydia had 13 children.

Thomas B., the third child of Thomas and Mercy was 6 years old when his father was killed due to a farm accident.

His mother left him with friends and/or relatives and returned to Willingboro, PA. When Thomas B. was 16

years old, he went to Willingboro, now called Great Bend, where his mother's family lived. His mother had re-

married to a man by the name of Moses Rowley and moved out of the area. At the time, rafting lumber on the

Susquehanna River was a lucrative industry and at 20 years old, Thomas B. was able to purchase two rafts of

lumber for delivery in Baltimore, Maryland. It was early spring and having been caught in storms and high water,

the rafts broke up and were swept away. Thomas took a severe cold and spent two months in a Baltimore hospital

sick with fever. When he recovered, without money, friends or his lumber, he made his way to Lansing,

Tompkins County, NY where Benjamin Buck, his mothers brother lived. There he taught school and gave singing

lessons. On 15 Oct 1823 he married Lydia Miller. They first lived in Reading, NY then North lansing and later

Groton. His early reverses seemed to have a damping influence on his life as he never dared take risks in business.

He was content to live in his quiet sphere and work day after day as demands required. Ever ready to minister to

the sick, it was Mr. & Mrs. Thomas B. Tarbell who aided those afficted with smallpox, when the disease raged

through the west side of Groton NY, about 1847. A tribute by his son Doctor, called him a quiet, accommodating

neighbor and a tender loving and watchful husband.

Ida Minerva Tarbell was an investigative journalist, lecturer and chronicier of American

industry. She was best known for her classic, "The History Of The Standard Oil Company"

(1904). Miss Tarbell was one of the journalist characterized by then President Theodore

Roosevelt as a "muckraker". Today, she would have been known as an Investigative Reporter.

Ida M. Tarbell was educated at Allegheny College in Meadville. PA and taught there briefly

before becoming an editor for the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle (1883-1891. In

1891 she took her savings and went to Paris, France where she enrolled in the Sorbonne and

supported herself by writing articles for various American magazines. In 1894 S.S. McClure,

founder of the McClure's Magazine hired Ida. While employed at McClure's, she wrote the

Standard Oil story which appeared as a serial. This story is one of the most thorough accounts

of he rise of a business monopoly and its use of unfair practices. Miss Tarbell's association

with McClure's lasted until 1906. She wrote for American Magazine, which she also co-

owned and coedited from 1906 to 1915, the year the magazine was sold. She lectured for a

time on the Chautauqua circuit and wrote several popular biographies, including eight books

about Abraham Lincoln. Later se served as a member of various government conferences and

committees concerned with defense, industry, unemployment and other issues. Her

autobiography, "All In A Day's Work", was published in 1939.

He died on 10 Sep 1876 in North Lansing, Tompkins Co., New York and was buried in N. Lansing Cem., North Lansing, Tompkins Co., New York.

Abram Haring Tarbell was the first son on Thomas B. Tarbell and Lydia Miller.

He married Margaret Howser 9 Nov 1848 and together they had eight children, four boys and four girls. Two of

the male children died young leaving Frank H. and the writers grandfather, Ed. Abram Haring was prominent in

the community taking a deep interest in the politics of his town and county. In 1861, he purchased the farm, which

later became known as the Tarbell Homestead, in North Lansing, Tompkins County, New York. This 100 acre

farm eventually was taken over by this first living son, Frank H. Tarbell. In 1876, Abram Haring died of injuries

received while leading a team of farm horses. Walking backward, not noticing where he was going, he backed

into a tree and the end of the wagon pole pinned him against the tree. Frank H. was about eighteen years old when

the accident happened and took over the farm replacing his father. My grandfather Ed, later was provided an

education at Ithaca High School and Cornell University, Ithaca, NY but received no partial ownership of the farm.

165. Doctor Tarbell-402 (Thomas Buck Tarbell (Tarble), Thomas Tarble, Zachariah Tarbell, Eleazer Tarbell, Thomas Tarbell, Thomas Tarbell, Thomas) was born on 16 May 1838 in Groton, Tompkins Co., New York. He died on 19 Sep 1895.

Doctor Tarbell, like the rest of his brothers was brought up on a farm, going to school in the winter and working

on the farm at home or for neighbors in the summer. In 1857, he started out for additional education advantages

and attended the fall term in Homer Academy, hiring a room and boarding himself.

His whole expense for this term, room, books, provisions, etc being $18.75. He taught the winter term (1857-

1858) in the first district north of Peruville and the following fall again attended at Homer Academy and returned

and taught in his own, known as the Benson district teaching and attending school alternately until 1861 when he

was in school at Ithaca, expecting to enter Union College in September in the class of 1865. But, when Fort

Sumter was fired upon in April 1861, he volunteered as a privite in Company A, Second Regiment, the first

military organization to leave Tompkins County.

Early in May he was made sergeant; in November 1861 second lieutenant; in Feburary 1862 first lieutenant. He

volunteered to lead a forlorn hope of one hundred men across the Clickahominy River in front of Richmond on

June 2, 1862, to drive the enemy's sharpshooters back so that General Woodbury's engineers could work on a new

bridge which was needed by McClellan's army north of Richmond. The day was successful, Lieutenant Tarbell,

with a squad of his men escorted Woodbury during the day back nearly one half mile in the enemy's country.

There was where he made his captaincy from President Lincoln in he United States Volunteers, which was given

to him in October 1862. At Malvern Hill, July 4, 1862, he was called by General Newton to serve on his staff.

Capt. Tarbell had been with his company at Bull Run, July 1861 and in all of its skirmishes and battles through

the Peninsular campaign. From this point in time he served as a staff officier with General Newton at South

Mountain, Crampton's Pass, Maryland and Antietam, till November, then with General David A. Russell, Third

Brigade, First Division, Sixth Corps, till March 1863 when by order he was sent to General Whipple's division,

Third Corps and was with him at Chancellorsville, May 1863 where General Wipple's division was so badly

slaughtered. General Wipple, mortally wounded. Captain Tarbell was the only member of the staff not wounded

or killed. The remnants of General Wipple's division being divided among the other two divisions in the Third

Corps. Captain Tarbell was sent to Third Corps headquarters early in June 1863. He served with General Sickles

in the Maryland and Pennsylvania campaigns and rode with him on the Gettysburg battleground July 1, 1863. The

story of the part the Third Corps took in that memorable engagement fills a bright page in history and is too well

known to need words here. Capt. Tarbell served with the Third Corps till it was disbanded. He was then assigned

to Cavalry Corps, serving with Chapman, Wells and Wilson through all of the campaigns in the summer of 1864.

He was captured by Mosley September 21 1864 near Winchester, VA and sent to the Libby Prison. He was then

transferred October 10, 1864 to Salisbury, NC, then October 15th to Danville Prison. On February 18 1865 he

was transferred back to Libby Prison, where he suffered as only Union prisoners know, all the torments of cold,

fifth, hunger and disease. When parolled, February 22, 1865 he telegraphed his confidential clerk, Professor S. B.

Howe, "Out of prison, purgatory has no terrors". On arriving at Annapolis, Capt. Tarbell was granted a thirty day

leave of absence. Although he was captured September 21 1864, his friends in the north had no tidings from him

until January 1865 and for a long time mourned him as dead. Captain Tarbell married Mary L. Conant March 14,

1865 at Peruville while enjoying his thirty day leave of absence. He was officially declared exchanged March 28,

1865 and ordered to report to General Sheridan for duty upon expiration of his leave. On his way to the army,

Capt. Tarbell stopped a few days in Washington and was present in Ford's Theater on the night of the

assassination of President Lincoln, April 14, 1865. He received a commission as major by brevet in United States

Volunteers for meritorious services. He left the United States service in August 1865. After Cornell University

opened in 1868, he attended five terms, was elected county clerk of Tompkins county in 1870 and re-elected in

1873. He is now engaged in the life insurance business, representing the Equitable Life Assurance Society as

gereral agent and has a very large range of duties. He is a total abstainer, using neither tobacco or liquor. In

religion, he was raised Baptist, in politics a Republican, a scholar of Greenley's New York Tribune. His home is

now with his family at No. 10 North Geneva Street, Ithaca The above was copied from the book: "Landmarks of

Ed died at the Marcy State Hospital of Arterio-sclerosis at the age of 68 having been a patient at Marcy for nine

The obituary of Ed Tarbell reads as follows: " Mr. Tarbell was born in North Lansing, Tompkins County, NY on

February 5, 1865. He attended the Ithaca High School and Cornell University from which he graduated in the

class of 1889 with the degree of Master of Science in Agriculture. He served as assistant to Professor Roberts of

the University for one year when illness forced his retirement.

The deceased was married to Laura Savage of Ithaca on March 19, 1889 and after he retired from the faculty at

Cornell, he became superintendent of Jersey Farm at Liberty, New York where they retmained four years. He then

went to Grand Gorge as superintendent of the Slawson-Decker Creamery for three years. In 1899 he took charge

of the Hillside Dairy Creamery at Stuyvesant Falls, Stuyvesant Township, Columbia County, New York for W. D.

Hatch and in 1909 came to Mr. Hatch's Red Gate Farm north of Earlville, New York of which he had charge until

ill health forced his retirement in 1929.

Mr. Tarbell was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Cornell and united with Lindewald Lodge No. 509, F.&

A. M. at Stuyvesant Falls on November 1, 1902. He filled all the stations in the Blue Lodge and was the senior

past Master of Lindewald Lodge at the time of his death. He was proficient in the ritual of the Order and aways

interested in the work."

My sister, Barbara J. Tarbell Stevens remembers Ed as a bit grumpy and stern in his older years. Funny what

children will remember! The writer, Rupert B. Tarbell, Jr. has no recollection of Ed and only fragment memories

of Laura, his wife.

The Red Gate farm produced certified milk which was shipped by rail to New York City. It is believed the milk

was sold to the Sheffield Milk Company.

1. Rupert was born in Liberty, Sullivan Co., New York to Ed and Laura Tarbell. Initially he was named Bertis

Rupert but a some point in time he changed it to Rupert Bertis. It was always somewhat of a mystery how Rupert

was named as research has failed to produce any ancester with either name. The writer recently received a copy of

the "Twenty Five Year Book" of Cornell 1889 graduates that had belonged to Ed Tarbell. included was a graduate

by the name of Bertis Rupert Wakeman who was in the school of Agriculture as was Ed. It is assumed that there

was a relationship between Ed Tarbell and Bertis Wakeman sufficently strong to cause Ed and Laura to name one

of their sons after him. .

2. In his youth, he lived in Liberty, Grand Gorge, Stuyvesant Falls and Earlville, all in New York State.

3. His father, Ed, managed various dairy processing plants around NY state including the Red Gate Stock Farm

that was located about three miles north of Earlville on state route 12B.

4. Rupert went to school in Earlville attending the old school which was located about half way down Fayette

Street. He ran from the farm to school each day which was about 4 miles.

5. Rupert played both the clarinet and saxophone. He played in the Earlville town band and an all saxophone

band.

6. As a teenager, he hand milked 12 cows twice a day at the Red Gate Farm. He dug Indian arrow heads in an

area just a little north of Earlville Lake. In the winter, all the men on the farm cut blocks of ice from a pond on

the east side of the road. They would slide the ice down a "V" shaped trough, down the road and across the road

into the ice house where it was packed with saw dust so the ice could be used during the warm months to cool the

milk before it was taken to the railroad station to be shipped to New York City.

7. On June 2, 1917 Rupert married Ellen Amelia Cummings at the Red Gate Farm. It was told that after the

wedding, Rupert and Ellen were running across the lawn to their automobile when Ellen broke the heel of her shoe.

Before leaving on their honeymoon, a stop at the shoemaker shop was necessary.

8. Shortly after their marriage, they left Earlville and Rupert went to work for the New York Central Railroad as a

fireman. During this time, they lived in Minoa and Eastwood, NY. A son Warren was born in Minoa and a son

Donald was born in Eastwood.

9. In those days, the trains operated on steam and the boilers were hand fired. Rupert, who was a small man,

must have worked very hard shoveling all that coal. One of the runs Rupert recalled was from Syracuse to Little

Falls. At Little Falls they would turn the train over to another crew that would take the train to Albany. They

would then take the west bound train back to Syracuse. During World War I, they would transport munitions

from Buffalo, NY to Albany, NY. The trains operated on a secret schedule for security reasons. His job with the

railroad prevented Rupert from entering the military service during World War I.

10. After the war, probably in the early 1920's the country was in a recession and Rupert was laid off from the

railroad. The family returned to Earlville where Rupert took a job as a automobile mechanic, working for a man

named Marshall Flansberg. Later, Rupert and another man were partners in a garage business. When the

Depression of 1929 occurred, the business failed. Rupert payed all debts out of his own pocket.

11. When the family returned to Earlville in the early 1920's, they lived first in a three family, side by side house

on North Main Street. They occupied the unit at the north end next to a family by the name of Stedman. Rupert

and family next moved to what was known as the Buell house on Preston Street. A daughter, Barbara was born in

this house in 1924. Not long after the birth of Barbara, the family moved to a small white house on the north side

of West Main Street. This house is located on the east side of a four family side by side house. This house was

prone to lightning strikes. In 1925, the family moved to 50 Fayette Street which is directly across from the "new"

school. Barbara was one year old. A son Rupert Jr. was born in this house in 1929. This house had been moved

from North Main Steet. This house was the family residence for many years. In 1967, Rupert and Ellen moved to

Abbott Avenue where they lived in a moble home.

12. In 1929, Rupert took a job as custodian at the Earlville Central School. He worked for the school until 1950.

Ellen also held several jobs. She worked in the school cafeteria, the Paper Box Factory in Earlville and during

World War II, she worked at the Oneida Community Silver Company. The Company silver plated aircraft

bearings as part of the war production effort.

In 1950, Rupert asked the school board for a raise in salary. The board refused so Rupert felt obligated to quit.

He first worked for the Chenango Camp Trailer Company in Sherburne, NY. He then worked for a man in

Earlville by the name of Othello Jenks installing and repairing oil fired furnaces. When Mr. Jenks gave up his

business, Rupert worked for TACO Company Sherburne who made various types of antennas. His last job was

with Norwich Pharmaceutical in Norwich, NY where he worked as a pipe fitters helper and later in the plant

mixing room. About 1963, Rupert retired.

13. Between 1963 and 1967, Rupert and Ellen had a moble home trailer travelling to Flordia and other places

enjoying their retirement. Around 1974 both Ellen and Rupert found living on their own more and more difficult.

They spent one winter with their oldest son Warren and then entered the Norwich Hospital Nursing Hone in 1975.

Rupert died in the Nursing Home in 1976 and Ellen died a year later while staying in the same Home.

Ellen was born on 6 Jul 1898 in Earlville, Madison Co., New York. She died on 21 Mar 1977 in Norwich, Chenango Co., New York and was buried in Earlville Cem., Earlville, Madison Co., New York.

Died at the Norwich Hospital Nursing Home 1977.

When the family lived on the farm near Furman's Mill, Sherburne

Twp., Chenango County, NY, Ellen was between 8 and 16 years old. When she was 9, one of her jobs was to

bring pails of water from the creek to the barn for the animals. However, some geese that lived on the creek

would chase her causing the water to spill. Everyday it was a race to see if she could avoid being pecked and get

most of the water to the barn. Ellen went to

school in a one room schoohouse which was still standing in 1998 when the writer visited the area. The school

was about two miles from the farm. Sometimes she was allowed to ride an old horse but most of the time she was

required to walk. later, when she

was older, Ellen would drive a team of horses and wagon to Earlville to pickup supplies of grain and such for the

farm. After her father died in 1914, Ellen and her

mother moved back to the town of Earlville. Ellen worked at the Earlville Hotel but the writer does not know the

nature of the work. Ellen was 19 years old when she married Rupert B. Tarbell of Earlville.

He worked as a Pharmacist for the Hubbard Drug Store in Norwich and later was associated with the

Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He and his family lived at 53 Rexford Street in Norwich.

The obituary for Newell says he was born in Roxbury, Delaware County, NY which is near Grand Gorge where

his father managed a milk processing plant. It is likely the family did live in Roxbury and Ed worked in Grand

Gorge.
