Fred Atwater of 321 N. Geneva Street, a lifelong resident of Ithaca and founder of Atwater’s grocery business died this morning, November 22, 1950 in Conklin Sanitarium after a long illness. He was 78. He was sixth president of the Chamber of Commerce and a past president of the board of the Ithaca Reconstruction Home. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; Fidelity Lodge 51, F&A Masons; St. Augustine Commandery, and Eagle Chapter 58; Tompkins County Shrine and Kalurah Temple, Binghamton; No. 3 Fire Company, Protective Police and Ithaca Rotary Club.  Mr. Atwater was born in this city Jan. 24, 1872, the eldest child of Frederick Atwater, an Ithaca grocer; and Mary Ellen Sauseman Atwater. In 1897 he started his own grocery business on W. State Street. That year he married Miss Elizabeth G. Smith of this city. She died in 1924. In 1926 he married Mrs. Anne Howell Ludlow who survives him. Other survivors are two daughters, Miss Helen Ludlow of Lockport and Mrs. Elizabeth Ludlow Pearsall of Rochester; two sisters, Mrs. Edwin A. Wilcox and Mrs. William E. Pearson of Ithaca; three nephews, Frederick Atwater Wilcox and Harold E. Wilcox, both of this city and Edward Atwater Pearson of Louisville, KY; two nieces, Mrs. Mary E. Pearson Brandes of Sautauket, L.I. and Mrs. Elizabeth Pearson Millard of Chicago, Ill., and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the family home, 321 N. Geneva Street. The Rev. Walter A. Dodds, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.  

Jesse Baker, 84, of 4550 Route 79, Burdett, NY died Sunday, August 15, 1993 unexpectedly at his home.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anna Lena Schall Baker; daughter Rita Pierce, Washington Court House, Ohio; daughter and son in law, Dorothy and Clifford Lott, Burdett, NY; son Jesse Duane Baker; and friend Don Rizzo, Pleasant Ridge, Michigan; grandchildren, Daniel Pierce, Dayton, Ohio, David and Beverly Pierce, Painted Post, NY, Douglas and Pam Lott, Montour Falls, NY. Robert Bruce Caslick, 92, of Newfield died Friday, Oct. 10, 1986, at home, following a brief illness. Mr. Caslick is survived by two daughters, Janet Johnson of Syracuse and Virginia Slater of Newfield; two sons, Richard Caslick of Ithaca and James Caslick of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on October 14 with the Rev. John Van Duren of Horseheads officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Newfield.

Miss Vera A. Cudlin of 508 Fletcher St. Horseheads, formerly of Newfield, died Saturday, Mar. 3, 1951 in the Syracuse Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of the Horseheads Presbyterian Church and attended Newfield Central and Horseheads High Schools. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cudlin of Horseheads; two brothers, Joseph and Peter Cudlin, both of Newfield; a step-brother William Kohberger of Carmel; a step-sister, Miss Katherine Kohberger of Horseheads; an uncle Peter Cudlin of Newfield; two nieces and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Allen Funeral Chapel, Newfield.  Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Newfield. 

Mrs. Marie Cutter, 58 of South Road, Newfield, widow of Donald Cutter, died Saturday evening, Feb. 27, 1954 in Tompkins County Memorial Hospital.  She was a member of the Newfield Baptist Church and Newfield Grange 242. She is survived by two sons, Paul and Kenneth Cutter of Newfield, two daughters, Mrs. Joyce Maki of West Danby and Mrs. Kathryn Maki of Newfield; an uncle Fred Howell of Fayetteville, an aunt, Mrs. Ada Howell of Rochester, and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Allen Funeral Chapel, Newfield with the Rev. Amos Harnish of the Newfield Baptist Church officiating. Bearers were Albert Messenger, Maynard Chaffee, Stanley Shaw and Adrian Everhart. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Arthur Decker, 81, a retired farmer, died today, August 24, 1951 at his home on Schaeffer Rd., Newfield, after a short illness. A resident of Newfield for approximately 51 years he was at one time town assessor and was justice of the peace for more than 30 years. Before he went to Newfield to make his home, he worked as a guard at the Elmira Reformatory.  He was a member of the Newfield Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Decker; a daughter Mrs. Marie Cutter of Newfield; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, a brother, Stewart Decker of Greene, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Allen Funeral Chapel, Newfield with the Rev. Wallace Stevens of Ithaca officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Bearers were Paul and Kenneth Cutter, Elmer Maki, and Leland Gardner.

Mrs. Rose M. Dorn, 50, of Newfield died Sunday, Feb. 18, 1951 at her home on the Schaefer Rd. after a long illness. She was a member and past president of the Rural Letter Carriers Association Auxiliary, and a member of the Newfield Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, George F. Dorn; two sons, S/Sgt. Carl Dorn of the U.S Air Force, Tucson, Ariz., and George Elwin Dorn of Newfield; two daughters, Mrs. Morton Woodward, Jr., of Elnora and Miss Doris C. Dorn of Newfield; four brothers, Vern Sharp of Millport, James Sharp of White House Station, N.J., Earl Sharp and Emery Sharp of Ithaca; a sister, Mrs. E.M. Hoyt of Ithaca; a granddaughter, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Allen Funeral Home, Newfield. The Rev. Leon Northrop of the Breesport Methodist Church will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Earl Barfoot. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Newfield.

George A. Gardner, 72, resident of Newfield for 44 years and former postmaster there for 12 years, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2, 1947 at Memorial Hospital. Gardner was a member of King Hiram Lodge, F&AM for 40 years, master of the lodge for a year and is secretary for 25 years. He was also a member of the Newfield Methodist Church, and Newfield Grange 242. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Harriett Gardner of Newfield; 2 sons, Leland Gardner of Reading, PA and Kenneth Gardner of Rome; a daughter Emily Gardner of Newfield, a brother, Rowland Gardner of Penn Yan; a sister, Mrs. Mary Nichols of Penn Yan; 4 grandchildren 2 nephews and a niece.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Allen Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Wayne Archer, pastor of the Newfield Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Newfield. Friends may call at the chapel at their convenience.

Mrs. Mildred Neigh Graves, 39, of 1326 Airport Rd. Endicott, a former resident of Ithaca, died Saturday, July 14, 1956 in Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist church and the B-Square Club of that church. She is survived by her husband, Gorman Graves; a daughter Miss Patricia Graves; two sons, James Graves and Donald Graves, all at home; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Heigh (sic) of Ithaca; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Buffum of East Northland, Mass, and Mrs. Barbara Moravec of Ithaca and four brothers, Virgil, Stanley, and Lyle Neigh, all of Ithaca and James Neigh of East Northfield, Mass. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. H.E. Cole, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Owego. Sharon Lee Herrington, 8-year old daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. J. Edward Herrington of 218 Columbia Street, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 1952, at Memorial Hospital after a long illness.  Besides her parents, she is survived by a sister Judy Herrington; maternal grandparents, Mrs. And Mrs. Harry McKevitt, Tampa, FL; and paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. John H. Herrington of Ithaca and a number of aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Wagner Funeral Homes, 421 N. Aurora Street with the Rev. William S. Hicks, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Miss Charlotte E. Hunt of West Danby, lieutenant (jg) in the Navy Nurse Corps, died at the U.S. Veterans Administration Hospital at Jamaica Plains, Boston, Mass., Thursday morning, August 7, 1952. She was 31.  Miss Hunt was a graduate of Ithaca High School in 1938 and Auburn City Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and later of Tulane University. She entered the Navy Nurse Corps in 1945, and served in hospitals at Sampson Naval Training Center and at Charleston, N.C. She was a member of the Baptist Church of West Danby and of the Nurse Corps of the American Legion in Boston. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Hunt of West Danby; a sister, Mrs. Frank Wilson and a niece, Bonita Wilson, of Ypsilanti, Mich., and several uncles and aunts and cousins. Funeral services will be held in West Danby Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11. Burial will be in West Danby Cemetery. Kenneth Elias Knapp, 50, of 325-1/2 Elm Street died early today, September 4, 1953, in Memorial Hospital. He had been employed as a butcher in Gegg’s Red and White Store. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Knapp; a son, Frederick R. Knapp of Ithaca; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Knapp of Newfield RD; three brothers, Lloyd A. Knapp of Varna, Harold R. Knapp of Newfield and Claude E. Knapp of Ithaca; a sister, Mrs. Leonard Hunter of Newfield; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Wagner Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter A. Dodds officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.

Anna Kouf, 81, of Pleasant Valley Rd., Groton, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 13, 1993. Mrs. Kouf was a retired employee of NCR and an avid bowler for several years. She is survived by her husband, Otto Kauf (sic) of Cortland: sons and daughters-in-law, Louis and Carolyn Mikula of Lansing, Vincent and Betty Mikula of Groton: brothers, James Farkas and John Farkus (sic), both of Lansing: sister Mary Bartholf of Miami, FL; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends are invited to call at the Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams Street, Groton on Tuesday from 7:00 to 9;00 p.m. Funeral and committal services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Elsie E. Maki, 76, of Newfield, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 1981 in Tompkins Community Hospital after a brief illness. She was a native of Ishpeming, Michigan. Mrs. Maki was a member of West Danby Baptist Church, the West Danby Grange, the Home Bureau and the 4-H Program. She was the widow of John E. Maki. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Helene Latson of Endwell; a son and daughter-in-law, John R. and Joyce Maki of Ithaca; five grandsons, one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at West Danby Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Baltich officiating. Burial will be in West Danby Cemetery.

John Rudolph Maki, 66 of 184 Seven Mile Drive, died Sunday, September 17, 1989 at Taylor Brown Hospital in Waterloo. He was born in Ithaca, son of the late John E. and Elsie Westerlund Maki, and was a retired carpenter, having worked for many local building contractors.  Mr. Maki was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the West Danby Baptist Church and the Carpenters’ Union. Mr. Maki is survived by his wife, Joyce Cutter Maki of Ithaca; two sons, Wendell R. Maki of North Haledon, N.J., and Eric L. Maki of Ithaca; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 20 at the Newfield People’s Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Stuart Officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Newfield.

Minnie Cutter Maki passed away on Monday, September 15, 1997 at the Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca following a long illness. Minnie, the daughter of Irvin and Lottie Tompkins was born on October 3, 1915 in Newfield. She is survived by her husband, Elmer Maki; a son, Donald and daughter-in-law, Barb, of Lowell, MA, a son, Dale Cutter and daughter-in-law Alice of Newfield; a daughter, Dawn Cutter of Newfield; a daughter-in-law Dolores Cutter of Pensacola, FL; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Myrtle Lampila, Hazel Tompkins, Esther Williams, and Erma Myers, all of Newfield. She was predeceased by her husband Paul Cutter, son Duane Cutter and her sister Helen Rose. Minnie was a lifelong resident of Newfield. She worked as a housekeeper for the Hall family and for several years in the Office of the Registrar at Cornell University.  Allen-Manzer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A private memorial service will be held.

Everet Makie, 71, of R.D. 2 Trumansburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 1986 at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Trumansburg Fire Company. Mr. Makie is survived by three daughters, Eleanor Button and Linda Witte, both of Fairport, and Dorothy Schlegel of Natick, MA; one sister, Aurora Hill of Ithaca; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ness Funeral Home in Trumansburg. Burial will be in Jones Cemetery, Trumansburg.

Mrs. Minna Makie, 81, of Rudyard, Mich., formerly of Perry City, died at her home Saturday, May 5, 1956, after a short illness. The widow of Frank Rudyard (sic) [Makie], she is survived by 4 daughters, Mrs. Alena Mattson of Rudyard; Mrs. Aurora Hill, Odessa; Mrs. Mary Wahloss, Finland; Mrs. Hilda Salo, Sparrow Point, MD; 7 sons, John of West Danby; William, Syracuse; Eino, Spencer; E. Anthony, New York City; Wayne and Richard (Ted), Perry City; and Evert Makie of Covert; 27 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Emma I. Messenger. Funeral services for Ms. Emma I. Messenger of Spencer, formerly of Ithaca, who died April 6, 1951, were held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Bangs Funeral Home with the Rev. Vern E. Spencer of the Newfield Baptist Church officiating. Bearers were Adrian Everhart, Stanley Henry, Stanley Shaw, Victor Tiensuu, Maynard and Elbert Chaffee. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Austinburg, PA.

Deborah E. Myers of Piper Road, Newfield, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1953 in Tompkins County Memorial Hospital where she had been ill for a week with polio. She was born Nov. 9, 1950.  She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Myers, Jr. of Newfield; two brothers, Samuel and Leland; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Lottie Tompkins of Newfield; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Laura Myers of Waverly; her paternal grandfather, George Myers Sr. of Freeville, and six aunts, an uncle and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, 1953, in the Allen Funeral Chapel in Newfield. The Rev. Edward L. Hanna, pastor of the Newfield Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Dewitt Payne, 81, of Newfield, died unexpectedly while he was attending the meeting of King Hiram Lodge 748, F&A Masons, in Newfield Masonic Temple Friday evening, May 2, 1952. He was master of this lodge in 1898-99 and also served for several years as chaplain. In September 1952, he would have received a 60 year medal. He was first president and honorary president of the Past Masters Association of the Cayuga-Tompkins Masonic District. A lifetime resident of Newfield, he was a member of the Newfield Methodist Church and was a trustee of that church for many years.  A retired blacksmith, he had returned at the age of 73 to work in the war years at Allen-Wales, Ithaca, retiring again at the end of World War 2. He had also been a justice of the peace in Newfield. He is survived by five daughters, Miss Laura Payne, Miss Dortha Payne, and Mrs. Ray Smith of Newfield and Mrs. James Bishop and Miss Florence Payne of Ithaca; a brother, Bert L. Payne of Newfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Allen Funeral Chapel, Newfield, with the Rev. Orlo D. Stewart of Locke and the Rev. Edward L. Hanna of the Newfield Baptist Church officiating.

Mrs. Edith M. Payne, 78, of South Rd., Newfield, died unexpectedly Tuesday evening, July 7, 1953, in the Dodd Nursing Home, 602 Elmira Road. She was a member of Newfield Grange 242, Mystic Chapter 275, Order of Eastern Star, and Woman’s Auxiliary Mail Carriers Association. She is survived by her husband, Bert L. Payne of Newfield; 4 sons, Gordon and Lawrence Payne of Newfield, Walter of Fabius and Harry Payne of Susquehanna, PA, a daughter Mrs. Erma Payne of Newfield; 5 grandsons; 6 granddaughters; 6 great-grandchildren, and several cousins. Mr. and Mrs. Payne observed their golden wedding anniversary Dec. 16, 1948. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Allen Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Earl Barfoot of Moravia and the Rev. Edward Hanna of Newfield officiating.  Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Harriet Payne, 74, of 512 Clark St. Waverly, died Saturday, May 10, 1952 at her home. A former resident of Newfield, she was a charter member of Mystic Chapter 275, Order of Eastern Star of Newfield; a member of Newfield Grange 242 for over 50 years and a member of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service of the Newfield Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Fred Payne, Waverly; 2 daughters, Mrs. Ralph Van Riper of Newfield and Miss Francis Payne at home and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Newfield Methodist Church with the Rev. Orlo Stuart of Locke and the Rev. Edward Hanna, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. 

Miss Carrie Peck, of Newfield, Ithaca Journal correspondent and former town clerk, died early today, Feb. 20, 1951, in Tioga County General Hospital, Waverly. She was a lifelong resident of the village and took an active part in community life. She was co-manager, with a brother and sister, of her father’s grocery store there after her father’s death. After the death of her brother about 5 years ago she sold the store. She was a member of the Newfield Methodist Church and of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service of that church; a member of Mystic Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and past matron; a member of the Mt. Olive Shrine, White Shrine of Jerusalem of Auburn; of the Ladies Monday Club of Newfield and a past president of that club. Private funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Wagner Funeral Home, 421 N. Aurora Street, Ithaca, with the Rev. James E. Gordon of Chemung and the Rev. Earl Barfoot of Newfield officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Newfield.

Charles H. Schryver, 75, of 104 Fayette St. died Saturday, Feb. 3, 1951 in Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Well known to many Ithacans, he had worked in Atwater’s from 1902 until about two years ago with the exception of a short time during World War I when he worked at the Thomas-Morse Aircraft Co. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Ithaca Lodge 71, Iroquois Encampment 16, and Canton Ithaca 58, IOOF; Hawthorn Rebekah Lodge163 and Ladies Patriarchs Militant, 10, and Royal Arcanum, Forest City Council 147. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian Howe Schryer, and several cousins. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Wagner Funeral Home with the Rev. William Hicks, pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.

Agnes Thatcher, 84, of 314 N. Plain Street died Wednesday afternoon in Tompkins County Memorial Hospital. The body was removed to the Wagner Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes Parson Thatcher of 314 N. Plain Street, who died October 26, 1949, were held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Wagner Funeral Home, 421 N. Aurora Street with the Rev. H.G. Budd, minister of the First Methodist Church officiating. Bearers were Prof. B.K. Northrup, Clifford Thatcher, Kenneth and Paul Cutter. Interment was in Lake View Cemetery.

Frances K. Todd, 93, formerly of W. Danby, died Monday, Dec. 4, 1995 at the Lakeside Nursing Home.  She was born in Newfield on Jan. 12, 1902, a daughter of the late William & Grace (Beach) Kresge. Frances completed high school from Newfield in 1919 and graduated from Geneseo Normal School with a teaching certificate and taught in the Town of Danby. She married Roger F. Todd on Aug. 23, 1922; he died in 1938. Upon his death, Frances managed the Todd farm with her children until her eldest son, Milton completed school to take over. Frances was a lifetime member of the West Danby Baptist Church, West Danby Grange & American Agriculturist Assoc. She was also state treasurer of Federation of Home Bureau, in which a scholarship was named in her honor for a home economics student at Oneonta State College. She was also director of the Housekeeping Department at Tompkins Memorial Hospital for many years, retiring at age 70. Surviving are sons: Milton R. Todd of Sebring, FL with his wife, Jean. Ralph K. Todd of Seaside, Oregon and his fiancée, Janet Boyd; daughter Elizabeth T. Smith and husband James Jr. of Holland Patent, NY; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Roger and Janine. The family would like to thank the staff of 3B Lakeside for their care and kindness to Frances, as well as Dr. Bryce and Dr. Taylor. The funeral will be at the West Danby Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. Spring interment will be at West Danby Cemetery. Allen-Manzer Funeral Home of Spencer is handling the arrangements.

John H. Tompkins, 80, retired farmer, died at his home on South Rd. Town of Newfield, today, May 10, 1952, after a long illness. He was a member of the Baptist Church and Newfield Grange 242. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Iva Tompkins; 2 nephews, Homer Tompkins and Ronald Tompkins of Newfield and 3 nieces, Mrs. Evelyn Reinhardt of Watkins Glen, Mrs. Mary Caslick of Newfield, and Mrs. Alice Stevens of Willseyville. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Allen Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Vern E. Spencer officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Ethel G. Ward, 68, of 4085 Waterburg Rd., Trumansburg, NY died unexpectedly Saturday, August 14, 1993 at Cortland Memorial Hospital. Ethel was born January 16, 1925 in Interlaken, NY, a daughter of the late Alfred M. and Ruth Howell Ward. She was employed as a Laboratory Technician at Cornell University for the past 15 years. She was a life resident of the Trumansburg area. She was predeceased by a son James Ward who died April 13, 1974.  She is survived by four sons, Sam Ward and Larry Ward of Trumansburg. Ralph Ward of Odessa and Robert Ward of Interlaken; a daughter, Nancy Ward of Trumansburg; 11 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Carl Ward of Mecklenburg, John Ward of Trumansburg; 3 sisters, Elma Rice of Interlaken, Alice Ward of Trumansburg and Freda Martin of Owego; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 1993 in the First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses, Rev. Thomas M. Lange officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Interlaken.

Mrs. Buena H. Weatherell, 88, librarian of the Newfield Library, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 1951 in Memorial Hospital. Born in Newfield and a lifelong resident of that place, she was the daughter of George Ham, one of the workers on the covered bridge in Newfield. Widow of William Weatherell, she became librarian of the Newfield Library at the death of her sister, Miss Dora Ham, who had held that position for many years. She was a member of he Newfield Methodist Church; the Ladies Monday Club; a charter member of the Mystic Chapter 275, Order of Eastern Star of Newfield and past matron of that chapter She was past district deputy grand matron of Cayuga Tompkins District in 1910 and helped organize Trumansburg Star Chapter 479 and Forest City Chapter 436 of Ithaca and Star chapters in Breesport and Van Etten.  She also taught in the Newfield public schools for a number of years. She is survived by a son, George Weatherell of Alaska; 3 granddaughters; 2 nephews, Maurice Ham of Dryden and Dr. Lynn Ham of Arcadia and several cousins. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Allen Funeral Chapel, Newfield, with the Rev. Edward Hanna, pastor of the Newfield Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Alice A. Wilcox, 78, of 414 N. Aurora Street, widow of Edwin A. Wilcox, died at her home early today Sept. 4, 1953. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two sons, Frederick A. and Harold E. Wilcox, both of Ithaca; a sister, Mrs. W.E. Pearson of Ithaca; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the family home with the Rev. Walter A. Dodds, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.
