Hine's Family Cemetery

Location: East side of Barnes Hill Road, 2 miles north of intersection with Dassance Road.
Town of Newfield, Tompkins County, NY.

Cemetery is inactive.

This record is as complete as possible at this time, it is a small cemetery and was read May 4, 1986, by Cathy Knauff. It has many more graves, but the grave markers are in very poor condition and stones are difficult to read.

Alan Chaffee, Town of Newfield Historian states the following on this cemetery: Type: Family Status: Deserted, Time Frame 1849-1906; 16 marked burials. It is our hopes to re-check this cemetery for errors and updates. A photo will be taken at that time.

From Four County History Book - William Hine.

In the early days of settlement of Newfield, the town was fortunate in having substantial settlers and practical farmers for its pioneers, men who emigrated hither well knowing the hardships and privations to which they would be subjected, and who were fully resolved to surmount the many difficulties that stand between the settler in a new country and independence. In the list of such men we are pleased to count William Hine, who was born in England, March 24, 1794. He learned the blacksmith trade while a youth, and worked at it until he emigrated to America, and took up his permanent residence in the town of Newfield, in the year of 1834. He then built a blacksmith shop, and also purchased fifty acres of land, which he cultivated, as well as carrying on the business of the smithy. Not only did he do this, but also by enterprise and untiring industry he added to his original purchase until he became the owner of one hundred and seventy-eight acres of well cultivated land, which he subsequently sold to his son, and removed to the village of Newfield, where he purposes to spend his declining years, and in an economical way enjoy the fruits of his early industry and thrift.

Mr. Hine has been twice married. His first wife was Rachel, daughter of Hugh Hicks, of England, by whom he had three children, two dying in the "old country," and one - a son - accompanying him to the United States. His second wife is Mary, daughter of Samuel Bishop, also a native of England, where she was born on the 23rd of December, 1798. This union was blessed with six children, three of whom reside in Newfield.

For twenty years Mr. Hine has been a member of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Hine united with the Free Will Baptist denomination more than thirty years ago, and for that entire period has been a faithful member, as her husband has been of the church to which he belongs during his membership therein.

The chief characteristics of Mr. Hine have been his industry, perseverance, and thrift, which coupled with an impregnable honesty and uprightness in his dealings with his fellow-men, have conspired to give him a most creditable reputation.

1880 Newfield: This would be William Hine Jr.

Mary Ann Teeter 1838-1902 married William Hine 1827-1905, he was most likely a son of William Hine Sr.

In 1892 living in Newfield was William Hine Jr., age 65, born in England, wife Mary Ann, age 54, Edward W., age 28, David age 22, Wilber age 10, Minnie age 33, Aurelia age 25., with Edward Brind, father in law, age 79.
