Strong Family Cemetery

Also known as: Brotherton Farm Cemetery

A family cemetery located on what was once the homestead of Benajah Strong's youngest son, Simeon P. Strong, and where Simeon's daughter, Mrs. J. W. Pratt, lived in later years. Located in Lansingville, in back of the old Brotherton House at 424 Lansingville Road. Cemetery is on private property.

Directions: Traveling north on Lansingville Road, second house on the left after passing the intersection with Dublin Road.

View stone STRONG Benajah veteran's flag died May 22, 1836, age 96 yrs 3 mos American Revolution. DAR Patriot Index has Benajah STRONG, b. Feb. 22, 1740, d. May 22, 1836, m. 1st Jane COCHRANE, 2nd Abigail POWERS, Lt, CT. He was the son of Adino STRONG and Deborah PRIME.

Original Settler. Capt. Benajah STRONG enlisted in the French war and was a captain of a volunteer company of soldiers in the Revolutionary war. He was present at the burning of Danbury, CT. He removed about 1782 to Athens, Greene Co., NY, where he bought the confiscated farm of a tory officer, and the rights and privileges of the ferry between Athens and Hudson. He removed afterwards to the Great Bend in the Susquehanna, near Binghamton, NY and after three years residence there to Ithaca, NY; removing after two years to Lansing (then Milton) where for a dollar per acre he bought 2,000 acres of land. He married in 1818 for his second wife, Mrs. Abigail (NEWLAND) POWERS, widow of Elder Lemuel POWERS, a Baptist clergyman at Stillwater, NY. She was the mother of the first wife of President Millard FILLMORE and was born February 22, 1758. She died February 21, 1850 in Irving, Chautauqua County, NY.

1st wife of Benajah STRONG
died July 11, 1815, in the 74th year of her age. From the Strong Genealogy: Jane COCHRANE was the daughter of Samuel COCHRANE of Woodbury, Connecticut. She was born in 1742 and married Benajah Strong on February 3, 1761. Benajah and Jane (COCHRANE) STRONG had eleven known children:

1. Truman, b. 1762, a Revolutionary solider under his father, d. in the service of disease (no military records have been found).
2. Deacon Benajah Strong, b. 1763, d. December 1851, aged 88 years; married Abigail HURLBURT, d/o Capt. Julius HURLBURT of Great Bend, PA and Occurrence HINMAN.
3. Thankful Strong, b. March 22, 1765, married 1st Oliver CASTLE and 2nd Joel BACON.
4. Almorena, b. 1769
5. Amos, b. 1770, d. soon.
6. Amos, b. 1771, married Polly GOODWIN, d/o William and Ruth GOODWIN.
7. Salmon Strong, b. October 1772, d. April 15, 1837, married Elizabeth JAGGER.
8. Jane, b. 1774, d. Sept. 17, 1787, aged 13 years.
9. Simeon Prime Strong, b. 1774, married Phebe GOODWIN, d/o William and Ruth GOODWIN.
10. Anna, b. April 12, 1778, married Daniel BACON, s/o Beriah BACON of Norwich Landing, Connecticut & Sarah SMITH.
11. Sally, b. unknown, married a Mr. SILCOX from whom she soon separated and returned to her father's house.

  STRONG Jane, dau. of Benajah & Jane STRONG died Sept. 17, 1787 One source has that Jane is buried in the Strong Family Cemetery. Headstone not found.

View stone LOBDELL Mark died March 25, 1876, age 4 mos. Child of Hiram & Mary L. LOBDELL. Another source has given name as Mary and date of death as March 6, 1878. In the 1850 census for Lansing, Hiram LOBDELL, 4 yrs. old, b. Tompkins Co. is in the household with parents, Ebenezer (b. abt. 1802 in Orange Co.) and Phebe (b. abt. 1808 in Cayuga Co.). In the 1870 census for Lansing, Hiram, age 23, is living with Ebenezer, mother not listed. Other members of the household are Lewis (Hiram's brother), age 20, Mary L., age 26, Fredonicia, age 4, Smith, age 2, and William, age 7/12. In the 1880 census for Lansing, Hiram remains in the household with Ebenezer. Hiram reported his marital status as widowed; his daughter, Fredricka, age 14 is also in the household.

View stone STRONG Charlotte A., wife of Marvin STRONG died April 4, 1850, age 27-2-27. IGI Record has Charlotte GREGORY. Marvin Strong was a son of Simeon Prime STRONG and Phoebe GOODWIN
View stone PRATT Caroline STRONG, wife of Rev. John W. PRATT born May 15, 1817, died February 28, 1895 Dau. of Simeon P. STRONG and Phebe GOODWIN. Rev. John Wesley PRATT is believed to be buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, Cortland Co., NY. Nothing further has been found on him.
View stone STRONG Phoebe, wife of Col. Simeon STRONG died April 20 1854, age 74-7-11. Phoebe GOODWIN. One source has dau. of William GOODWIN of Northampton Co., PA and Ruth GIBBS.
  STRONG Col. Simeon P. died October 14, 1841, in the 68th year of age. Simeon Prime STRONG. Unsure what Col. represents as no military records for Simeon STRONG have been found at this time.
No headstone has been found, however you can view the footstone.
  BROWN Elizabeth, wife of Ebenezer BROWN died February 28, 1836, age 50 yrs. Daughter of William GOODWIN of Lansing. One source has that she was b. in Delaware Water Gap, PA. William GOODWIN's will, dated June 17, 1825, proven January 23, 1826, mentions sons, William and Richard, and daughters, Sally MORGAN, Phebe STRONG and Betsey w/o Ebenezer BROWN.
View stone FOX Jane, dau. of Rev. Dana & Jane FOX died February 16, 1842, age 17 yrs 24 dys. Reverend Dana Fox was the son of Moses FOX and Caroline MACK. He married 1st Jane STRONG, dau. of Simeon Prime STRONG and Phoebe GOODWIN. They removed to Kansas where Jane died, and he married 2nd Harriet EGAN, widow of Edward STRONG, son of Simeon Prime STRONG and Phoebe GOODWIN.
  FOX Caroline, dau. of Rev. Dana & Jane FOX died July 26, 1847, age 10-3-2.  
View stone EGAN Phebe Ann, wife of Chas. C. EGAN, & d/o Col. Simeon STRONG died March 9, 1838, age 26 yrs and 7 mos. American Vital Records from the Baptist Register, 1824-1829 has that Charles C. EGAN, Esq., of Utica, married Phebe, d/o Col. Simeon P. STRONG, of and at Lansing, November 17, 1829. There is a Charles C. EGAN in the 1830 census for Lansing. In the household is 1 male 10-15 yrs., 1 male 20-30 yrs., and 1 female 20-30 yrs. Not found in 1840 census.
