Mount Olivet Cemetery
Located on Rt 79 (East State Street), Ithaca, NY.
Plot owners list at this Cemetery is based on a 1930 map
Prepared by Carl Crandall, CE.
This information comes to the web page with the approval of Father George Heyman, Pastor of Immaculate Conception Church. Immaculate Conception owns Mount Olivet as well as Clavary Cemetery.
Everyone in the cemetery is Irish and it is believed every one is a Roman Catholic.Patricia Welch is willing to do look-ups for Mount Olivet as her time permits.
Prior to the acquisition of Mt. Olivet, Roman Catholics were reported to have been buried in the old Ithaca City Cemetery, on University Ave. Early burial records for Immaculate Conception Church make no mention of the Cemetery location.
Mount Olivet was active from approximately the 1860s until the 1940’s. Land for Calvary Cemetery, the currently active Immaculate Conception Cemetery, was purchased in 1915. After 1915 most people were buried in Calvary Cemetery, unless their family had a plot at Mount Olivet.
Originally named Immaculate Conception Cemetery, August 1915, the name Mt. Olivet was adopted for the old cemetery and Calvary for the new cemetery to avoid confusion between the two. Mount Olivet was originally part of the Driscoll Brother’s quarry. The land was acquired from the Driscoll family in the 1860s. This was during the pastorate of Father James Tuohey. The Cemetery is a long piece of land that narrows as it moves uphill (northeast) from the 900 block of East State Street.
The 1872 map of Mount Olivet contained 48 blocks that were subdivided into 450 lots. Each lot could contain multiple graves; possibly four or eight to a gravesite. A 49th block with 54 lots was added to the East End a short time later. In addition, a potter’s field is located where the horseshoe shaped driveway begins to go back down hill.
