Think of me kindly when my life id o'er,
I ask no tears, I ask no useless sighs
But when the heart that loved thee throbs no more,
Let not the memory in they bosom die;

Think only of the virtures that you knew,
When linked together in love’s willing chain
Life o’er its pathway its sweet blossoms threw.

Note: no marker was found in 2001
Believe graves of John and Alice are next to their two
children - two unmarked graves are clearly seen,
a search for headstones was unsuccessful.
John Johnson and his wife, Alice Watson Johnson,
came from Leeds, England by ship in 1841. He went
up the Hudson River by boat to Newburg leaving his
family there, including a baby girl born on the trip over,
which took three months, as they were blown of course.
The baby was Caroline "Carrie" Johnson (1841-1900) who
later married William Crispell (1822-1900) son of Matthew
& Elizabeth (Norris) Crispell of Slaterville Springs.
John and his 16 year old son, William W. Johnson,
walked to Ithaca to the farm at the corner of Route 79
and Pine Tree Road, and borrowed an oxen team and returned
to Newburg for the family. John had been to New York State
on two occasions, probably knew the farmer.
He settled on the Hanford Farm on Slaterville Road where
his son farmed and he worked at boat building, on the site
of the late Remington Salt works. |
