Letter Three
Groton Sunday Sept 23rd/1855
Uncle Joseph (BROWN) as I agreed to write you a letter & as I heared
you was looking for one from me I concluded to write one this morning.
It is a very pleasant morning more so than it has been for most of the past
week. Last Wednesday night there was quite a frost it makes the corn
look quite a different color there was a great deal of corn that was not ripe
and some that was some was cut up. ours was very green corn is very
late as a general thing. Philander (BROWN)’s folks started for
the west the 11th inst which was a week ago last Tuesday and arrived there
Thursday the same week Horace (MORTON) got home last week
Wednesday night and brought a letter for Grand Mother from Philander &
Martha (HATHAWAY - BROWN) they wrote they was all well with the exception
of the Children had hard colds. Philander’s Machine starts this
week Sid WILSON goes with it. Horace likes Illi(nois) very much
so much so that he is going back in a few weeks. Harry GORE moved out
west last June near the SPAULDINGs Roxana (Roseana
?) HINNEY went with him, and while Horace was out there he died and
was burried there. Horace says there was as large a procession as is
generaly seen over 20 wagons in it. Crops are prety good here.
they raised the new steam saw mill yesterday & day before. though
I dont know as you knew there was going to be one here. ther is going
to be one 20 to 30 horse power built by the PERRIGOs and Newel CARPENTER
Ben HATCH went with Philander as far as Michigan
Ed BILLS I expect is going with Sid Wednesday. It is quite healthy
here at present. this is all I can think of to write now.
Lewis M. MORTON
To Margaret ( BROWN - ORMSBY )
I received your letter but have been busy ever since and now I have wrote
all I can to Joseph and cant think of anything to write to you
I guess Mother will write some and if you can read this to Joseph you are
a good schollar any way
Margaret I will spend a verry few moments in writing
to you and Joseph Lewis has told you in short that Philanders
folks had got to their journeys end they have landed to Mr BULLOCKs
thier goods had not arrived when Horace came from there
they was going to hire a house in or near Rockton, Winebago Co (ILL)
Beloit village (Rock Co, Wis) is four miles from Rocton and it is twentyfive
miles from the SPAULDINGs Horace went to see the
SPAULDINGs and so did Philander they think they are
doing well it has been a time of care and anxiety here this season
Marthy ( HATHAWAY - BROWN ) was some opposed to going west this fall
and it was verry bad time for her to go considering all things, she thought
if Joseph could only go he would be so much company for her and the children,
but they have gone and there seems to be many more that want to go
Mother is verry lonesom and says She hopes Joseph will come home to stay this
winter, I feel that our ranks are broken and I do not expect to
see it otherwise I sometimes think this world is fading
and so am I and so are my friends I would say it a general
time of health in this place but I must close
if you think this worth answering write
