Letter Eight

Dear Sister Margaret
I have been intending writing you this long time have been waiting for Mother to come home so that we could hear from Joseph (BROWN) She has been visiting him and on her way back staid with David (BROWN) in Ithaca a few weeks.
They come out yesterday, Mother is quite smart and talks of going to Summerhill to look at a place for Joseph (BROWN) near Mr HAMLINS, this week She says She does not see how they can get a living where they are found them all well and as comfortable as she expected. But Uncle PARKERs folks are very poor so much so that they cannot eat any butter nor much else that is good. and old Kate is dead and Aunt Lucinda & Ida (PARKER) had all they could do to keep Mr PARKER up
I am truly glad we are not so poor as to make us such miserable misers never mind they wont always last and cant carry it all along and somebody will have it by and by. when I see such stingy narrow souls I wish they could have real poverty awhile and see how good it really is.

The folks are all well on the hill as far as I know have not been on the hill to stay since last spring only Mercy BACKUS and I went up a little while one day and Emeline ((BROWN)MORTON) looked as if every friend she had was dead it was just before the draft and some of her boys were talking of enlisting but finally none of them went. They wanted to know how it made me feel I told them I did not think it would help the matter for me to make myself perfectly miserable about it before hand yet it would take all my dependence do you see that all the money they can have does not make them happy
Williams (MORTON) folks are about as usual Susan ((BROWN) MORTON)has been sick with dysentery has got around again but she is troubled very much with her humor she thinks her sickness was caused by healing up the sore on her leg Dr MAE says the sores are caused by stagnant blood but does not tell the cause of that.
The last I heard from Ed and Betsey ((BROWN) BILLS) they were out of a job and feeling quite dishertened did not know what they should do next James (WILLIAMS) saw him yesterday or day before we live where we used to, James (WILLIAMS) works for Horace (MORTON) in the cabinet shop we are well, Alida (WILLIAMS) goes to school Father (WILLIAMS) has been sick but is quite well again grows old in some respects. will be 81 Nov 14
Elder L W OLNEY is Pastor of Groton Baptist church and is smarter than anyone we have had since I have known anything about it he is liked very much by his own church and the others too. they all pour in when they have no meeting and sometimes when they do. I hope the mutual feelings will last and good be done

Mother says she wants to hear from you and where you are and where you are going and what doing write and let us know
What is Lucian (ORMSBY) up to tell him that Alida (WILLIAMS) has not forgotten him she has ben talking of sending her picture, but the daguerian rooms and all the fixings have been burned so that she will have to wait until another time
