The 1908 Kennedy's Corners Ladies Aid Quilt

This Quilt was created by members of the Ladies Aid Society of the Enfield Center Church, Enfield N.Y. located at Kennedy's Corners -- Mecklenburg Road, (rt. 79), and Sheffield Road (old Town Line Road).

A fundraising Bazaar was held in 1908, and among the craft items, goods, and services raffled, was a 70" x 84" white quilt with red borders delineating twelve squares with 399 names of family and church members in the form of wheel spokes and rims in script using red embroidery thread. Each square has 33 names. Two names, plus the name of President William H.Taft, fall outside the squares. Two names are duplicated in separate squares 11 & 12.

It may be assumed, that the name(s) at each wheel hub is the embroiderer of that square. Square no. 5 lists $43.30 next to the embroiderer's name, which may indicate her as Treasurer.

The Quilt was won by Laura Tilton Sheffield "on a .25 ticket" whose name and that of her 4 year old son Clifford appear as spokes in square no. 10.

The photographs and list of names on the quilt, show local family names still familiar nearly 100 years later. This photograph taken in 1978, shows Clifford Sheffield at age 74 with his Granddaughter, Laura Sheffield at age 16, in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
