NEWS ITEMS FROM VARIOUS NEWSPAPERS 1882-1900, Divided by Town ITHACA --Richard Reed, familiarly known as "Whistling Dick", leaves for Virginia to-day to visit his mother, whom he has not seen in ten years. -- Geo. Tichenor of Chicago, who has been spending a week with is parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Tichenor, expects to return to-morrow. He has a good position as private secretary in a detective agency. -- Miss Minnie Pangburn who was formerly a teacher in the West Hill School, was married at 8:30 this morning in the Park Baptist Church to a Mr. Farrington of Ulysses. Mr. and Mrs. Farrington left on the 9 o'clock train for a wedding trip. -- Mrs. Salisbury and daughter Blanche, wife and daughter of Sam Salisbury of the United States Express office of this village, arrived in town last evening from Wellsboro, NY, and will henceforth make Ithaca their home. NEWFIELD --The widow of the late Maj. John Puff who formerly resided here, is lying seriously ill at Elmira, NY. On Monday last Dr. C.C. Cook was called by telegraph to pay her a professional visit. -- James Puff an old gentleman upwards of eighty years old and father of John L. Puff, died Sabbath morning. He is buried today. -- John C. Hughes died of consumption at his residence yesterday morning. -- A son of Daniel Starks of Jackson Hollow died yesterday of diphtheria. --Mrs. Wm. H. Wetherell, of Mentor, Ohio, was last week visiting old acquaintances and a son and daughter in this village. She returned hom Monday. -- Mrs. Nancy Smith, the mother of the late Henry Smith and 102 years old, died Tuesday. -- David Frost, the veteran fifer of Newfield, died early Tuesday morning. --Clark Knowles, also of Newfield, who has been sock for the past two years with consumption, died last week. -- Mrs. Susan Adams, aged 70, and Mrs. Henry Horton, aged 73, sisters, were both buried last week. They were the children of Mrs. Nancy Smith, who is still living and is 98 years old. Though Mrs. Smith is very hearty for one of her age yet it is feared this double affliction may be more than she can endure. -- The death of Mrs. William Horton occurred Tuesday. -- Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Bishop, of Binghamton, are visiting Mrs. Bishop's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wetherell. Mr. Bishop was formerly principal of the Union school here. -- Mrs. A Berdan and son, who have been visiting her parents of this place for some time past, will return to her home at New York City sometime next week. She will be accompanied by her sister, Miss Lou Cortright. -- Miss Minnie Bush, of New York City, is visiting her father, John Bush, of this place. -- Mr. and Mrs. William Tabor were made happy last Tuesday morning by the advent of a ten pound girl. --Mrs. Hollenback, who has been spending the past winter with her brother S.W. Weiss, of this village, returned to her home in Pennsylvania last Tuesday. -- Mrs. F. B. Smith and her niece, Mrs. Kittie Buggy and children of Cold Water, Mich. are visiting at L. E. Cutter's. they leave Monday for Scroonin Lake in the Adirondacks mountains, where on account of poor health they will reside during the summer. -- Two men from Ithaca, Pope Beardsley and Chas. Poyer, were arrested last week Friday on complaint of James Bailey of this town, who accused them of coming to his premises and driving away a cow, which they slaughtered. On the other hand the parties accused assert that they had purchased the cow of Bailey. The examination was held before Recorder Tompkins yesterday. -- John Brown, formerly of Newfield, now of Portland, Oregon, is visiting relatives in town. Mr. Brown went out seven or eight years ago. He has a good business and is pleased with the country. -- A circular has been received at the post office offering a reward for the recapture of John Loomis. He is supposed to be the robber of the Trumbulls Corners postoffice. -- Henry Stanton, an old gentleman living on west Hill, is reported to be very ill. -- Governeur Weller, well know among Ithacans and the people of this town , died Sunday evening at his residence near Strattons, on the Inlet Road. His funeral took place Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock and his remains were interred in the Haight cemetery east of Ithaca. --Information has reached here that James B. Mallory, who left this village for Idaho four years ago, died of pneumonia Thanksgiving day. -- Miss Susan Hughes, daughter of the late John C. Hughes died Monday. -- Mrs. Samuel Godley, or Trumbulls Corners, died of inflammation of the bowels, on Sunday morning. The funeral took place Tuesday. --Mr. LH Bower will move to Havan, NY about the 1st of March and resume the undertaking business. Mr. George F. dudley goes to Owego and will there engage in the drug business. SLATERVILLE -- Miss Ettie D. Bassett of Sing Sing, is a guest of her sister, Mrs. J.B. Tobey. -- Mr. and Mrs. Brown Mulks are happy over the baby girl who recently came to stay with them. SPEEDSVILLE -- Mr. Elihu Brink, of Ithaca, visited his daughter, Mrs. Charles Lane, last Saturday. --Mr. W. H. Liddington and family have taken up their abode in Speedsville. TRUMBULL'S CORNERS -- We learn as we go to press of the death of Mrs. George Fowler, of Trumbull Corners. WATERBURGH --Mr. and Mrs. Herman Updike are made happy by the arrival of a little daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Murray are also rejoicing over the advent into their family of a "wee bonnie laddie." WILLSEYVILLE Fact included (but town cut off on my copy):
