Last Will and Testament of Ezra Chase
Tompkins County Surrogate Court, Will Book M, p. 381
I, Ezra Chase of the Town of Enfield, in the County of Tompkins and State of New York,
Considering the uncertainty of this Mortal life, and being of sound mind and memory, - Blessed
be Almighty God for the same - do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and
form following that is to say:
First, - I give and bequeath to the heirs of my daughter Hulda Marvin(Deceased) the
sum of two hundred and fifty dollars.
Secondly, - I give and bequeath to the heirs of my daughter Sally St. John(Deceased)
the sum of one hundred dollars.
Thirdly, - I give and bequeath to the heirs of my daughter Jane Ehle (Deceased) the
sum of two hundred and fifty dollars.
Fourthly, - I give and bequeath to the heirs of my son James Chase (Deceased) the sum
of two hundred and fifty dollars; All of which legacies or sums of money I will and order to
be paid within Eighteen months of my decease.
Fifth, - I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Julia Chase the lawful interest on
one thousand two hundred and fifty dollars in lieu of dower, said interest to be paid
annually from and after my decease.
Sixth, - I give and bequeath to my two Grandsons; to wit, Ezra Chase and Parvis W.
Chase the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars to be equally divided between them share
and share alike, the interest of the above sum to be paid annually; for the suport and
education of said Children; and when the said Children shall become of age, the said sum
of three hundred and fifty dollars shall be paid to them or the survivor.
Seventh, - The rest, residue, and remainder of all my real and personal property
I give and bequeath to my Children following; to wit, Daniel K. Chase; Zalmon F. Chase,
John B. Chase, Phebe A. Bagley, William C. Chase, Adeline C. Brown
to be equally divided amongst them share and share alike; after all former legacies and debts
have been paid.
And Lastly, I hereby appoint my son Zalmon F. Chase Sole executor to my last will
and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made, if any.
In witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 19th day of November
in the year one thousand Eight hundred and sixty Eight.

Chase of the City of Elmira N.Y., respectfully shows that letters testamentary on the estate of Ezra Chase, late of the town of Enfield in said county, were granted to your petitioner on the 28 day of November 1873, That the persons' interested in the estate of said deceased, as creditors, legatees, next of Kin, or otherwise, and their places of residence, to the best of the Knowledge, information and belief of your petitioner, are as follows, to wit:- 1. Chase who are minors. That Perry G. Ellsworth of Ithaca Tompkins County as your petitioner is informed is general guardian of said American, Legrand and James Chase. That Nelson R. Brown of Enfield, Tompkins County as your petitioner is informed is general guardian of Lilian Ehle, That Adaline C. Brown of Enfield Tompkins County is, as your petitioner is informed general Guardian of Ezra Chase. This is from the executor of Ezra Chase will, Zalmon Chase, to the Surrogate judge. Surrogate Court State of New York County of Tompkins Surrogate Court To Mr. VanValkenburgh Surrogate of the County of Tompkins The petition of Zalmon F. Chase, of the city of Elmira, Chemung County, State of New York, respectfully showeth: That Ezra Chase, late of the town of Enfield, Tompkins County, New York, clergyman and farmer, departed this life at his residence, in the said town of Enfield, on the twenty seventh day of March, in the year 1873, having previously, as your petioner is informed and believes, duly made and executed his last will and testament. That your petitioner is named in the said will as the sole executor thereof. That the said deceased was a citizen of the United States. That he was at or immediately previous to his death, an inhabitant of the county of Tompkins in this State, and that his said last will and testament relates to both real and personal estate. Your petitioner further shows, that the heirs and next of kin of the said Ezra Chase, deceased, are Daniel K. Chase residing at Parkman, Geauga County, in the State of Ohio John B. Chase, residing at Milan, Bradford County, in the State of Pennsylvania Phebe A. Bagley, wife of William D. Bagley William C. Chase, (a lunatic) Adaline C. Brown (widow) all residing at Enfield, Tompkins County in this State, and your petitioner, residing at the city of Elmira, Chemung County in this State all of full age, his only surviving children Julia Marvin, wife of Samuel P. Marvin residing at Havana, Schuyler County, in this State. Amanda Purdy, wife of Oliver Purdy residing at Narren Joe Davis County in the State of Illinois Lois Sellen, wife of Lee Sellen residing at Castile, Wyoming County, in this State Elizabeth Fox (widow) and Eva Marvin both residing at Eddytown, Yates County, in this State all of full age the only surviving children of Huldah Marvin deceased who was a daughter of the said Ezra Chase, deceased, Catherine Ensign, wife of C. D. Ensign, residing at Mount Gillead, Morrow County, in the State of Ohio Betsy J. Carpenter, residing at Richmond, Washington County, in the State of Iowa, all of full age, the only surviving children of Sally St. John deceased who was a daughter of the said Ezra Chase, deceased, Herman Brown, residing at in the State of Wisconsin, Nelson Brown and Zeno Brown, both residing at Enfield, Tompkins County, in this State, all of full age and Lillie Ehle, residing at the place last aforesaid, a minor, and whose father, John Ehle, resides at the same place last aforesaid, and Ella Ehle, residing at Parkman, Geauga County, in the State of Ohio, a minor, and the adopted daughter of Daniel K. Chase aforesaid, the only surviving children of Jane Brown, deceased, by his first husband and Jane Ehle deceased by her second husband and who was a daughter of the said Ezra Chase, deceased, Angus F. Chase of full age and Harman F. Chase Horace M. Chase Oscar B. C. Chase - all residing at Verplank, Westchester County, in this State, whose mother Catharine Chase, resides at the place last aforesaid, all of whom are the only children of James S. Chase, deceased, who was a son of the said Ezra Chase, deceased, Ezra Chase and Parvis W. Chase residing at Enfield Tompkins County, in this State, both minors, having no general guardian, the only children of Parvis S. Chase, deceased, who was a son of the said Ezra Chase, deceased, The said Ezra Chase, deceased, leaves no widow him surviving Your petitioner further shows, that he is informed and believes, that the surrogate of the county of Tompkins has jurisdiction to take the proof of the said last will and testament, and over the executor thereof, and prover of granting letters testamentary thereof, with all powers incidental thereto, and that he is desirous that such proof be [rest of document missing from my file] Thank you Ray Fuller for sharing this information.
